Slovenian EU leadership announced on social media on Friday that 27 EU (EU) countries have agreed to suspend all links from South Africa.
The latter states that it has “asked member states to screen and isolate all travelers entering the EU.”
The news came as several countries, including France and Italy, announced they would suspend ties with South Africa.
South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia and Eswatini have been affected by the crackdown.
A case of the “nu” variant was discovered in Belgium on Friday, raising fears about the acceleration of its spread.
Speaking at a press conference earlier in the day, Health Minister Olivier Véran said that the new variant “worries national and international scientific authorities because it presents many mutations in its genetic profile”.
“To date, we do not know about the potential for this variant (…) to cause more or less severe symptoms than the current variant, (…) but we know that its distribution has been found in South Africa, which is very fast, which means it is highly contagious, so It justifies taking action, ”he said.
