Russian and Chinese foreign ministers discuss the situation in Kazakhstan

AA / Moscow / Emre Gurgan Abe

The Russian and Chinese foreign ministers spoke by phone on Monday about the latest developments in Kazakhstan.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Sergei Lavrov and Wang Yi have strongly supported the Kazakh government’s efforts to restore order in the country.

During their talks, they expressed concern over the influence of foreign powers in the events in Kazakhstan, and noted that Kazakh President Qasim-Jomar Tokayev has taken timely and proportionate action against these threats.

The Khabar 24 news channel quoted the health ministry as saying that 164 people, including a 4-year-old girl, had been killed in a week-long protest in Kazakhstan.

Protests against rising gas prices have turned into large-scale riots across Kazakhstan.

President Tokayev has declared a state of emergency in the city of Almaty and the oil-rich Mangistow region, from which protests have spread to other parts of the country.
